tzdata RPMs to accomodate DST change in 2007 for RHEL/RHL/CentOS/Fedora Core Linux
The DST timezone change for North America will come effective March 11, 2007 for the first time, as passed by US Congress in 2004. Fortunately, for Linux administrators and users, the Linux utilizes centralized database to store time zone information, namely, a package named ‘tzdata’. Actually, this is not entirely true, esp. for older Linux systems such as RHL 9, RHEL2, RHEL3, or even CentOS (RHEL AS) 4.1, 4..2. More details can be found in my latest post on how to prepare older Linux systems for 2007 DST changes.
To show case the work done to accomodate the 2007 DST changes in North America, here is an excerpt from tzdata RPM package from an up-to-date CentOS 4.4 server.

- Zones EST, MST, HST, EST5EDT, CST6CDT, MST7MDT, PST8PDT moved to
northamerica to guard against old files with obsolete information
being left in the time zone binary directory.
- Changes for countries that are supposed to join 2007 US DST
change. This includes most of Canada, however entries already in
the database (Alberta, British Columbia, Newfoundland, Northwest
Territories, and Yukon) were left alone for the time being.
For your convenience, I compiled a list of tzdata RPM packages updated to accommodate DST changes effective March 2007, for various RHEL/RHL/CentOS/Fedora Core Linux systems.
For Redhat Linux 9 or older, I couldn’t find updated tzdata package from fedoralegacy project. I’d think FC1 would be the closest match, since it’d been RHL 10 if Redhat hadn’t decide to abandon RHL in favor of Fedora Core back in 2003 or 2004. I have a few RHL 9 servers to manage myself, so I’ll report back. (report for up-to-date RHL9 servers, report for old RHL 9 servers with glibc older than 2.3.2-64)

- Fedora Core Linux 6
Whenever you download RPM or other packages from Internet, it is important to check the checksum after download (MD5SUM is here for the all the file listed in this post), and more importantly, to verify the GnuPG signature in the RPM packages using the signing key’s public key.
Here is the list of public key you may find handy, if you trust this site enough. If not, feel free to find corresponding signing keys in your own distribution or other official and/or authoritative source. (Here is how to verify the integrity and authenticity of a RPM package).
Post installation, it is essential to verify as well. Here is how to verify whether your tzdata is ready for the 2007 DST change on a Linux system.
P. S. 2007/02/27 More misc. changes were applied to tzdata. The latest on FC6 is 2007c-1. The changes since 2006p-1 are excerpted below. Depending on your locale, you may do just fine with the 2006p-1 RPM packages listed above.

The tzdata files are common between all Linux versions.
All you really have to do , is snatch the EASTERN file from a updated machine, copy to the proper location on your linux machine, in the redhat world redhat copys the file to /etc/timelocal, used to be a link, but that caused problems.

True. It is workable that way too, if you don’t have rpm available, or don’t have a ‘date’ command capable of ‘-d’ switch.
Two things to note are:
* rpm is preferred, since it helps to maintain patch level on systems, plus ‘rpm –verify’ will not raise false alarms in the future showing “suspcious” modifications.
* ‘date -d’ is preferred over ‘zdump’, since it tests real application and its associated system library calls, while the latter merely parses the tzdata database files.

guess I spoke too soon. For older Linux systems, you’ll have to manually update /etc/localtime if you don’t have or want to update glibc and glibc-common just to prepare for the 2007 DST changes in North America. More details can be found here.
