post2cat table deprecated in wordpress 2.3 problem
After in-place upgrading this wordpress blog site to the latest 2.3 from 2.2.3 recently, I noticed a problem: auto-save generated an error at the bottom of the WYSIWYG editor window. I said ‘Google search’ turned up nothing, that was true for Google web search and Google group search. When I searchc against blogs, I found some wordpress.org developer discussion about this table being deprecated as of 2.3 release. wonder why auto-save code still uses it. Today, even ‘Google web search’ turned up a few entries. One of them are this deprecated post2cat table caused problem for UFW tag plugin.
Searching post2cat in the source files, found ./wp-admin/includes/upgrade.php did the dirty work. Not only it dropped ‘post2cat’, it also dropped ‘categories’ and ‘link2cat’ tables.

It does cause MASS EDIT mode of comment management to malform. When I clicked to mark all 10 comments as spam, only one of them got the ax. It’s quite tedious to mark or delete them one by one.
Before I can find a get-around for the missing (deprecated) post2cat and post2link tables, I installed WP Hashcash tonight to rid of spam comments planted by the obnoxious bots.
