no better luck after RMA, with Trendnet TEW-432BRP wireless router
A replacement TEW-432BRP wireless router finally came from Trendnet via FedEx. I experienced random reset on an apparently defective TEW-432BRP wireless router. With my first report of the problem, Trendnet promptly asked to RMA it.
Minor gripes of the RMA process and the replacement unit 
- I had to mail the unit back in my own expense first. $8.95 with USPS first class including $0.65 for receipt confirmation. The ‘Free after MIR (mail-in rebate)” price tag motivated my purchase at first place.
It is simply wrong for a manufacturer to require the customer to pay for S&H for a defective unit, since the customers have already suffered enough from the should-not-be-there defects and have wasted enough time/energy to verify/document the defects and prove to the manufacturer’s RMA department. Wonder what Clark Howard woudl say to this line of arguments. Any idea?\
Case in point, I had a few desktop UPS units that went bad. TrippLite is the only one that didn’t require me to return the defective unit at all. Since the S&H cost nearly overruns the retail price of these cheap units, I have a few door stoppers from Energizer and other obscure brands, even though RMA were offered promptly.
- The replacement TEW-432BRP unit is not a shinny and sealed retail box as I expected. Instead, it is in an open-box. Worse, it is in an box opened so many times that the ears of the box have apparent wear & tear! That alone, didn’t give me warm & fuzzy feeling about the replacement unit.
- The replacement TEW-432BRP unit has different hardware version of C1.0R. The unit I RMAed was of C1.1R.
I plugged the replacement unit in and tried to restore to a saved working configuration . Major gripes followed
- It refused to accept the saved configuration of the RMA unit and complained about checksum failure. This is a stupid binary backup file, probably with MAC addresses embeded (or even hardware version and s/n number). How hard it is to prompt the user to allow to replace such unit-specific data with the current set?! This problem is not unique for Trendnet, but also seen with Netgear and D-link units.
- random reset still seen though less frequent. It resets much more frequently with Cisco VPN client running on a Windows XP box on the LAN.
- VoIP conversation is choppy at best when competing with streaming video application running at 256Kbps on the same LAN (100Mbps LAN and 6/12Mbps WAN). Not a problem with my old Netgear wireless router.
- VoIP calls got dropped randomly. Each call lasts less than ten minutes or so, when nothing else is running on the LAN! This alone prompted me to retire this ‘new’ replacement unit tonight.
The one-million-dollar question is, should I keep spending my precious $$$ to RMA it then keep spending my precious time to QA/test/UAT the wireless router for Trendnet or any other manufacturer?
