Trendnet TEW-432BRP random reset and connection loss
After three weeks use of the Trendnet TEW-432BRP wireless router, I experienced more serious problems.
- The unit resets itself randomly (every several hours or less than a couple of minutes). The computers/laptops behind it see ‘network disconnected’ then ‘network connected’, for both wireless and wired connections. No reasons were logged in the router log besides the fact it resets. All front LEDs go off dark then back on.
- VoIP applications seem to exacerbate the random reset and resultant network disconnections. This includes VoIP service as well as MSN video conference. This past Friday night, I couldn’t talk over 5 minutes before the unit dropped my VPN connection to work (Cisco VPN 3000 series) and my phone conversation in a conference call hosted by Global Crossing.
- When I swapped back in the old Netgear MR814v2 router, the connection stays up for days w/o any interruptions to desktops/laptops behind it. With everything else being equal, this points to the Trendnet TEW-432BRP wireless router as the culprit.
At this point, I had to leave the TEW-432BRP wireless router out since Friday. I emailed Trendnet support with the above information. Their tech support folks responded promptly and instructed me to RMA the unit.
Fingers crossed for luck with the replacement unit…
More details about the unit and my setup, in case you run into the similar problems:
- TEW-432BRP H/W: C1.1.R
- F/W 2.00b0012 — the latest firmware availabe for C1.x hardware version.
- unit plugged into an APC ups for power
- unit plugged into a Motorola SB4100 Surfboard cable modem for network service. It sits atop.
- Comcast high-speed internet.
- Three Desktop computers and three laptops on the LAN, with concurrent use of three computers at most. The Friday night incident had only two desktops online with wired connections.
- iTalkBB VoIP service (VoIP adapter model is xxxx) . Since MSN messenger kills it too, so the VoIP service probably doesn’t matter.

this issue has to be with the MTU size… try Sniffing for example your Messenger packets and look for MTU
