Security Alert : bridged vmware guest can sniff host, guest peers, and vice versa
On a CentOS 5/i386 server, I set up an Asterisk server recently in a VMWARE guest running CentOS 4.4/i386. The VMWare guest is set to use bridged networking and to obtain its TCP/IP settings from the same DHCP server used by the host server. I installed X-lite softphone from Counterpath on the host server, and configured it as a SIP extension to talk to another SIP extension on my wife’s Windows XP laptop.
When I used tcpdump on either the guest or host server to troubleshoot some networking problems, I was dumb-found to see that the VMWare guest can see the host’s traffic and the host can see guest’s traffic, as if they were on a dumb hub!
This is pretty scary, thinking some of production servers for finance department at work are hosted as vmware guests. The security implications are much more serious, when the VMWare guest peers and/or VMWare hosts are not part of a single intranet or company/department. An otherwise security-conscious customer may unknowingly expose their hosted servers to wire-tapping at ease!
Is this a bug, or a feature to be turned off?!
Here is a quick tcpdump session on the VMWare guest (with host @ 10.1.2.11, guest @10.1.2.13, and dns server @ 10.1.2.1). As you can see, the DNS query sent by the VMWare host server to the DNS server is a unicast packet destined to UDP/53. Such packet is not visible to servers not part of the conversation (10.1.2.11 <-> 10.1.2.1), if the bridged network behaves like a switched network.
