WordPress Hashcash v4.1 stopped trackback spam!
A week ago, I upgraded WordPress Hashcash plugin for this site to the latest version 4.1, since version 4.1 advertised to stop most trackback or pingback spam. I enabled the source IP check and source link check.
Apparently, the validation code is based on the simple trackback validation plugin at http://sw-guide.de/wordpress/plugins/simple-trackback-validation/
Today I noticed my comments soaring to 3723 after merely a week. I thought the new plugin was not effective. Then I realized it is because I set the action to queue the potential spam comments. Double checking the last ‘approved’ trackback comments (spams, mostly), it was dated May 21. Now I knew the new hashcash had stopped trackback spams dead on its own track!
Now I changed the action to ‘delete’. what a relief.
